Schools, Commutes and Everyday Errands: A Practical Look at Living Near Lake Fenton

October 28, 2026 · John Tremaine

A lake home is about weekends on the water, but you live there on weekdays too. Here are the practical basics for life near Lake Fenton.

Lake Fenton Community Schools

The Lake Fenton Community Schools district is named after the lake, as is the surrounding community. Some history and facts:

  • 1956: the original Lake Fenton Community School opened, replacing several one-room schools in Fenton Township. High school grades were added in 1959.
  • 2004: the current Lake Fenton High School opened at 4070 Lahring Road, which has a Linden mailing address. It is the district's only high school.
  • Today: the 1956 building is Lake Fenton Middle School.
  • Athletics: the high school's teams are the Blue Devils, competing in the Flint Metro League.

Important: the district overlaps only part of the Lake Fenton community and nearby areas. A home "on Lake Fenton" is not automatically in Lake Fenton Community Schools. Always confirm the district for a specific address with the district or the listing details.

Getting around

  • To downtown Flint: about 12 miles north via Fenton Road.
  • Highway access: US-23 runs north and south through the west side of the City of Fenton as a freeway.

Parks and recreation

Fenton Township, the City of Fenton and the City of Linden fund the Southern Lakes Parks & Recreation district together. It took over local recreation programs in December 2000. Source: Fenton Charter Township, Wikipedia.

Local government

Most of the lake is in Fenton Charter Township, which you can find at fentontownship.org. The southern tip is in the City of Fenton (cityoffenton.org). Which one applies affects services, ordinances and who you call about permits.
